Best Time for Tree Removal

Trees are living things, and though many live much longer than people, they do get sick and eventually die. When a tree dies or becomes sick beyond its ability to recover, it needs to be removed. If a tree is in a dangerous position, such as leaning over a structure or over electrical wires, it may need to be cut down as soon as possible no matter the season. But other than this, arborists believe that the best season to remove a tree is during the winter or earliest spring while it’s still dormant.

During the growing season, trees are surprisingly heavy as they are full of leaves and water. In winter, they are leafless, much lighter, and easier to take down. Even if they’re evergreens, the cold ground around them is less likely to disturb nearby plants. In many cases, it costs less to remove a tree during the winter. The summer brings fierce storms to Knoxville and other parts of Tennessee that damage trees or even uproot them, and arborists are busy. Another good reason to take a tree down in the winter is that birds aren’t nesting in them, and fallen leaves will not need to be cleaned up.

When it comes time to take down your tree, you’ll need to consider the cost, where the tree is located, and its size. You’ll also need to tell the arborists whether you want the stump removed. Before the tree is taken down, there are some things you’ll need to do:

  • Consult with the arborist first
  • Make sure the vehicles have enough space
  • Clean the area around the tree
  • Take away breakables, such as furniture, from around the work site

There might also be interruptions in your internet or cable service. After the tree is removed, you have the option of keeping the firewood. The stump can be pulled out of the ground completely, or it can be ground down until you can’t see it. Some residents can live with tree stumps because they believe they’re just unsightly, and stump removal is admittedly the job of an arborist. However, tree stumps are tripping hazards, and they can damage lawn equipment such as mowers or aerators. Rotten tree stumps also attract pests that can eventually move into human habitations.
